OC hopefuls take a shot at singing stardom

February 1st, 2010, 5:52 pm by Eric Morgan, Communications Manager

ohsaycanyousingOn April 11, an OC resident will step in front of a sold-out crowd to perform the National Anthem at Honda Center before the start of the Anaheim Ducks last regular season game against the Edmonton Oilers. A big moment on a big (icy) stage. Would you like to have a say at who this person may be? Could it be you?

Today marks the beginning of our annual “Oh Say Can You Sing?” contest with the Anaheim Ducks. Participants may enter a 30-second video singing a song of their choice, then recruit everyone they know to vote before the March 15 deadline (it’s also fun to check back for new entries and see who’s leading the pack).

Five people who get the most votes will participate with five judges’ picks in a finalist audition at Honda Center, where a winner will be selected. That individual will sing the National Anthem on April 11 at the previously mentioned game at Honda Center, and win a trip to Edmonton, Alberta in March, courtesy of Travel Alberta.

Will any of the aspiring performers submitting video to OCRegister.com move people to tears (like the crying girl on American Idol during Sanjaya Malakar’s “unforgettable” performance)? Time will tell.

Photojournalist Kari René Hall joins international conflict-recovery group

December 17th, 2009, 11:07 am by Eric Morgan, Communications Manager

Life was never the same for Register photo editor Kari René Hall after her 1989 visit to a refugee camp along the Thai-Cambodian border.

She was working as a staff photographer at the Los Angeles Times at the time, and took time off to document the lives of refugees at a camp adjacent to a war-zone. She followed and photographed a guerrilla soldier named Chan Peov, who had lost his leg to a land mine. His wife and daughter were killed in a shelling attack, and was struggling to raise two young daughters in treacherous living conditions.

When Hall returned home, she had produced several stories about Peov. The articles included contact information on how readers could help or donate to organizations working at the camp. Her stories would later become part of a book called “Beyond the Killing Fields,” which includes a message from the Dalai Lama. Her photos painted a picture of something that was not on most people’s radar. She witnessed how her personal story of Peov struck an emotional connection and moved readers to action.

In 2001, Hall published a story about a former outlaw biker named Henry Guiliante and the difficulties he had in raising his kids in an Anaheim motel. It had several parallels to the Peov story, as both were experiencing personal crises and struggling to become productive members of society.

Hall joined The Orange County Register in  2004, and continues to utilize photographs as a way to bring visual life to local conflicts, events, places, tragedies and opportunities.

Her stories of Peov and Guiliante served as case studies for a program to instruct front-line mental health professionals how to put a face to conflict and violence, beyond the statistics. Hall also believes giving a voice to people who are adversely affected by violence or conflicts often helps the victims themselves, as they want to tell their stories as part of their own recovery process.

Hall is a Dart Center For Journalism and Trauma Ochberg Fellow at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. The Dart Center For Journalism sponsored Hall’s tuition and expenses to participate in his two-week program in Porano, Italy last month, and she is currently collaborating with program participants online through May 2010. Frank Ochberg (to whom the Fellowship is named) personally invited Hall to participate.

As the sole journalist representative, Hall is a participant alongside social workers, doctors, psychologists and other mental health professionals from around the world. All participants are on equal footing and share ideas from their own professional experience. Hall is offering input on how to effectively work with and utilize the media to cover the recovery process and aftermaths of war, violence, natural disasters and other trauma.

In documenting the lives of Peov and Guiliante during stressful times, Hall observed how both men seemed ill-equipped to leave the trauma they experienced as soldiers behind them and become contributing members of society. Hall’s fellow classmates are proposing ideas on how victims of violence can feel a sense of self worth again, take control of their lives and support their families without exclusively relying on government aid.

The overarching mission is to develop an integrated global mental health action plan for trauma and post-conflict recovery, as part of a program developed 28 years ago in collaboration with the Ministries of Health.

Upon completion of the program, Hall will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma, in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Health.

Considering the fact there is more than one billion people who have been affected by violence or disaster in our world, it is a noble and complicated endeavor, for sure. Hats off to Hall for believing in the power of journalism to inspire positive change in the world and bring healing to the afflicted.

‘Gift of Giving’ explains people and purposes behind OC nonprofit agencies

2009 Gift of Giving cover

Job losses and the economic recession have had a devastating effect on families and children in Orange County. Growing numbers of people find themselves in need of basic necessities – food, shelter, clothing and other critical services. What is being done to lift up our neighbors in need? And what can we do to help?

The Orange County Register’s annual Gift of Giving section provides some inspiring stories to that end, as explained by local nonprofit agencies making a lasting impact on people’s lives. The section includes descriptions of families in need, volunteer opportunities during the holidays, and explains how you can join other volunteers and donors to make a difference in our community.

A 20-page print edition published in the Register today, with an introductory message from Register Publisher Terry Horne. The online edition invites you to share your own stories on how you give, and includes some impressive illustrations submitted by readers as part of a recent “design the Gift of Giving cover” contest.

While its Nov. 18 publication date coincides with the upcoming holiday season, the Gift of Giving section is also published on National Philanthropy Day. Copies of the section were distributed at the 24th Annual National Philanthropic Day Awards Luncheon, held earlier today at the Anaheim Marriott. The event was hosted by the Orange County Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and was presented by The Orange County Register.

About 100 communities throughout the country celebrate this day by honoring the individuals, businesses and groups that enhance their communities through philanthropy. And you thought it was just an ordinary Wednesday!

Thanks to all of the participating charities, sponsors and readers who contributed to raising awareness for critical needs in our community through the Gift of Giving section!

Ygnacio Nanetti found himself in familiar surroundings in the Register newsroom, facing one of the biggest assignments of his life: kissing his new bride.

Nanetti and his new wife, Jill Vandercook, tied the knot shortly after 3 p.m. today as part of a casual ceremony in the Register newsroom. It was a long yet romantic journey to marital bliss for Ignacio and Jill, who met 44 years ago. The Register’s Tom Berg wrote a great story last week about how they first met, began dating, broke up, lost touch, reconnected (with help from Jill’s daughter) and recently fell in love.

With more than 40 years working as a newspaper photographer (including 38 with the Register before retiring in 2007), Nanetti has photographed earthquakes, Academy Awards ceremonies, Super Bowls and countless other major news events for the Register. So one could argue he wanted to pay tribute to his life’s work during his wedding ceremony. But is that why he selected the Register as his somewhat unorthodox venue of choice?

“Everybody kept saying not to have a fancy wedding,” Nanetti said. “We considered eloping, but then you exclude your family and friends who want to be there. I have a lot of friends in the Register newsroom, so I brought the wedding to my friends.”

Ygnacio and Jill plan on spending three days in Newport Beach this weekend as a prelude to their official honeymoon – a cruise to Hawaii – next year.

About 20 family members joined a small group of employees – a mix of close friends and curious onlookers – for the ceremony. In celebration of their big day, Ignacio’s former colleagues posted photos and video of the ceremony on ocregister.com (hey, what better way to honor a fellow photojournalist?).

For the remainder of the day, the comments area of the Inside the OC Register blog will officially transition into an online wedding guest book! Whether you attended or simply watched our coverage of this ceremony, you are invited to utilize the comments box below to share well wishes, congratulations and any words of wisdom.
